Aamir Khan Creates a Powerful 3-Hour Documentary on Special Needs Artists
Aamir Khan is further establishing himself as Bollywood’s most compassionate storyteller. The actor-producer has just finished a beautiful 3-hour documentary about the special needs artists featured in his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par. Not simply another behind-the-scenes (BTS) feature, the documentary is intended to be a stand-alone experience. A documentary that represents ability, resilience and dignity.
Not Just BTS — This Documentary Is An Anthology Of Real-Life Courage
While most production houses just produce slick BTS videos as part of their marketing campaign, Aamir Khan has made a conscious creative leap. This investigation into the lives of the special needs cast will go far beyond a publicity stunt. The documentary will deeply explore the lives of the specially-abled cast, centring on their challenging days, their talents and their emotional ecosystems through documentary filming, personal interviews, and an undertaking of authentic storytelling.
In an interesting but very welcome twist, the documentary is co-directed by a group of young filmmakers — each assigned a segment of the documentary. This anthology format allows for the multiple perspectives, voices and textures of each director to shine through, with the connective thread being the celebration of the human spirit.
Aamir’s Commitment: “Beyond the screen, into real lives”
An inside source indicated that,
“Aamir didn’t just want to cast actors with special needs; he wanted the world to know who they are. This documentary is his way of doing justice to their stories, on and off screen.”
Aamir was, apparently, involved every step of the way from idea conception to final execution of the documentary so that each story reflects dignity and emotional truth. The actor’s return to social impact story-telling goes back to 2007 and the groundbreaking film Taare Zameen Par, which reclaimed dyslexia in Indian cinema and catalysed a national conversation about learning disabilities.
Release Strategy: Does the film work have social impact as a companion piece?
While Sitaare Zameen Par is expected to release in December 2025, Aamir is intending to launch this companion documentary 10–15 days later so that people see the fictional story before meeting the real stars beyond the camera.
The documentary is anticipated to land on digital platforms or might follow a limited theatrical+streaming model, as insiders speculate that it could also play at international human rights film festivals.

Whether through his eye for untold stories or his unwillingness to compromise on conscience, Aamir demonstrates yet again: above all, to be a star means to shine a light on others.
