Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Opens Way Less Than SRK’s Drama Genre Clash Affected Zero And Dunki

Despite fair reviews and a solo release, Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par manages only ₹10.70 crore on Day 1, far behind Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero and Dunki, both of which clashed with other big releases.

Sitaare Zameen Par Opens Softly Despite Expectations

Aamir Khan’s first film after two and a half years, Sitaare Zameen Par, has opened to date with ₹10.70 crore. However, expectations were high, and the critical reviews were solid. Sitaare Zameen Par is a meaningful remake of the Spanish hit Campeones, as well as an enjoyable genre film, but after the Day 1 numbers, it feels as if audiences were still not interested regardless.

While ₹10.70 crore is not a disaster, it is nowhere close to claiming any kind of record for an opening day. Comparing Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par to the opening day numbers of Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki, there is a marked difference. Dunki opened to ₹28 crore, while Aamir Khan’s film recorded a sweet but not near blockbuster. Even the opening day for Shah Rukh Khan’s 2018 film Zero was able to contend with KGF 2 on a common opening day, smart enough to not be in the same release week as Aamir Khan’s film Sitaare.

The Numbers: Sitaare Zameen Par Vs Zero Vs Dunki

Movie Day 1 Clash Scenario
Sitaare Zameen Par ₹10.70 cr Solo Release
Zero ₹19.35 cr Clashed with KGF 2
Dunki ₹28.0 cr Clashed with Salaar

An independent day on Friday for Sitaare Zameen Par should have been able to stay competitive. Even for Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero, despite poor and dismal reviews, the film managed to have more business through Day 1.

After going through the opening day box office numbers, the real concern for Aamir moving forward is the attraction of the genre itself or if his box office power is waning in the post-COVID world.

Will Weekend Momentum Help Sitaare?

Sitaare Zameen Par has a clear emotional strength, and critics and early viewers have praised it. Since there is no imminent OTT release, perhaps Sitaare will be able to build some momentum from good word of mouth over the weekend, especially among family audiences.

The bar for recovering is whether the film can trend upwards from Saturday and Sunday and if it will eventually cross the ₹100 crore mark. Usually Aamir’s content cinema has legs, but I wonder if that will be enough against the slow start?

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par opened at a significantly lower level than SRK’s Zero and Dunki, and there is no box office pre-competition. In terms of box office, Sitaare Zameen Par is the economy car from Aamir Khan.

The box office now rests entirely on weekend growth and word of mouth beyond the weekend.

Was the emotional sports drama able to find its groove, or is the audience’s taste too far removed from this genre?

Only time will tell if this is a comeback or a warning.
