In an industry that still sells “hero energy” through a fixed template, Adarsh Gourav is calling out how rare it is for filmmakers to bet on an unconventional leading man in a mainstream thriller. Fresh off the February theatrical release of Tu Yaa Main, the actor has spoken candidly about stereotypes, casting anxieties, and why he is grateful that his latest film backed a pairing Bollywood does not usually attempt.
Gourav, who headlined the survival thriller opposite Shanaya Kapoor, pointed to something as simple as a height difference to underline how deeply coded our screen romances still are. According to him, it takes conviction to cast against that conditioning, especially when the project is designed as a commercial theatrical play.
The Latest Update
Reflecting on the decision to cast him in a “commercial film” and the way Tu Yaa Main challenges a familiar Bollywood visual grammar, Gourav said, “It takes so much so much guts to cast a lead actor who’s shorter than the lead actress of your film because you’re directly challenging so many stereotypes that are present in the society… It is an experiment and it is a risk to make a commercial film on an actor like me and I’ll always be very thankful to Bejoy and Anand sir for taking that risk.”
He also shared that for him, chasing novelty is less about proving a point and more about choosing joy. “For me, it’s just about being able to enjoy my work and deriving joy out of this,” he said, before adding that acting was a deliberate choice even though he had other options. “It’s a very conscious choice I’ve made to act in my life. I have a finance degree, I could have done my MBA and worked in a company or I could have pursued music… I started my masters as well in finance but I dropped out after my first year and then went to drama school.”
And while Gourav comes across calm off screen, he said performance gives him a release valve for characters that demand something wilder. Speaking about leaning into that side, he said, “Wo shaitaani ka baahar nikalna bahut zaruri hai… I try to be neutral and calm for most part of my life so that I preserve that energy for the characters I play.”
