Actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film, Emergency. Not only does she star in the film, but she also directs it, taking on the challenging role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
As the film’s release date approaches, Ranaut has shared her insights into Gandhi’s character, highlighting both her admiration and criticisms.
Kangana Ranaut Calls Indira Gandhi Privileged & Nepotistic
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Kangana delved into her reasons for choosing to portray Indira Gandhi. She highlighted Gandhi’s privileged upbringing, being the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. Despite this, Gandhi’s determination to prove her worth in a male-dominated political sphere stood out to Kangana.
Kangana admired Gandhi’s determination. She pointed out that Gandhi’s privileged background might have made her lazy, but she didn’t let that happen. “Yes, she was privileged, and she was coming from a nepotistic background. After all, she was the PM’s daughter. She held official positions during her father’s term. I mean, what more privilege can one get in politics? She was coming from a privileged space, but she had the determination that I have to prove myself. That determination was worth applauding,” Kangana said.
Emergency Actress Critiques Indira Gandhi’s Governance Ability
Emergency explores the tumultuous period of 1975 to 1977, a time marked by the suspension of civil liberties and the imprisonment of political opponents under Gandhi’s rule. Known for its censorship and authoritarianism, this era is a significant focus of the film.
Despite her admiration for Gandhi’s determination, Kangana is candid about her critiques. She argues that Gandhi’s privileged background might have hindered her ability to govern with the maturity required for such a high office.
“The negative thing, someone’s manufactured struggle can’t be real. The fact that she didn’t face any natural struggle in her life and her dealing with it was not coming from a mature space, it still came from a space where she was thinking like the PM’s daughter. That was not a good thing. Because when you are in that chair, you need to be selfless. You can’t operate from a place of ego,” Kangana explained.
