Goregaon’s Film City has been a central hub for numerous Bollywood and television shoots for many years. However, as the film industry expands rapidly, there are growing concerns about whether the current location can meet its increasing needs.
Recently, on July 10, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) convened with Maharashtra’s Revenue Minister, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, to propose a substantial Rs10,000 crore investment in constructing a new Film City.
Why AICWA Proposed For New Film City To Maharastra Revenue Minister?
The association highlighted that the existing Film City, nestled primarily on forest land, cannot undergo further expansion. Drawing comparisons with Uttar Pradesh’s upcoming Film City, equipped with metro and airport connectivity, AICWA stressed the urgent need for a new, modern facility in Mumbai.
President Suresh Shyamlal Gupta of AICWA expressed concerns over Mumbai’s infrastructure failing to meet Bollywood’s requirements. He stated, “The UP government has ensured metro and airport connectivity and every possible amenity at Noida Film City. What is being done for Bollywood here?”
AICWA President Is HOPEFUL That Issues Will Be Addressed
While discussions are ongoing, Gupta remains optimistic that Maharashtra’s authorities, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, will swiftly address these issues. “If you drive through Film City, you’ll see broken roads, no street lights, and leaking set roofs,” Gupta pointed out. AICWA has proposed identifying 500 acres of land around Mumbai to initiate construction on a larger studio setup, prioritising environmental conservation by avoiding forested areas.
The AICWA’s proposal includes integrating essential amenities such as hostels to accommodate the influx of approximately 60 lakh industry workers annually. “More than 50 per cent of these workers return due to financial constraints,” Gupta noted, emphasising the need for supportive infrastructure like filmmaking institutes.
