Karan Johar On Bollywood Crisis: ‘Stars Asking For 35 Cr Are Opening To 3.5 Cr, How’d You Manage All?’

Karan Johar discussed the film industry's challenges amidst a turbulent year. Check what he said!

Karan Johar, a renowned filmmaker with a keen eye for Bollywood trends, discusses the industry’s current challenges during a turbulent year. Despite the massive success of Jawan in 2023, which earned Rs 1,160 crore, this year’s top film, Fighter, only managed Rs 358 crore at the box office.

Speaking candidly on the current state of affairs, Johar underscored the need for a paradigm shift in defining cinematic success, especially in the context of today’s discerning audiences. Johar remarked in a conversation with journalist Faye D’Souza on her YouTube channel that audiences now have very specific preferences and demand a certain type of cinema.

Karan Johar Highlights Rising Costs Of Actors In Bollywood

Johar also highlighted the escalating costs associated with filmmaking, pointing out inflationary pressures and the substantial fees demanded by top actors. He said, “the cost of filmmaking has increased. There has been inflation. There are about 10 viable actors in Hindi cinema, and they are all asking for the sun, moon, and earth. So, you pay them; then you pay for the film, and then the marketing expenditure comes. And then your film doesn’t do the numbers. Those movie stars asking for Rs 35 crore are opening to Rs 3.5 crore. How’s that math working? How do you manage all these?”

He added, “Yet, you have to keep making movies and creating content because you also have to feed your organization. So there’s a lot of drama, and the syntax of our cinema has not found its feet.”

KJo On How Industry Works

He expressed concern over the industry’s current creative direction, noting a trend towards herd mentality and a lack of conviction in storytelling. Johar lamented, “We tend to chase trends rather than explore diverse narratives. One moment it’s action films like Jawan and Pathaan, the next it’s romantic dramas. It feels chaotic.”

Reflecting on the divide between urban-centric and pan-Indian cinema, Johar advocated for a balanced approach that caters to both urban multiplex audiences and viewers in smaller towns. “We must avoid alienating any segment of our audience. There’s a demand for cinema that reflects Indian roots and traditions, offering pure joy without the pressures of critical acclaim,” he asserted.

For the unversed, Karan Johar’s latest action film Kill released in theatres on July 5 and is currently running in cinemas.
