Alia Bhatt’s latest film Jigra, just dropped its teaser trailer on September 8. This adaptation of the 1993 Dharma classic Gumrah has already sparked buzz for its fresh take on a beloved story.
Featuring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina, the film promises a unique spin, with Alia stepping into a never-before-seen role. So, what’s the deal with Jigra?
Alia Bhatt’s Jigra Is An Adaptation Of 1993 Classic Gumrah
According to sources close to Bollywood Hungama, this new film takes its inspiration from the original Gumrah, which starred Sanjay Dutt, Sridevi, and Rahul Roy. In the 1993 version, Dutt’s character goes to extreme lengths to rescue his lover from captivity in a foreign land.
However, Jigra flips the script by making the sister the hero saving her brother, and the siblings’ relationship adds a fresh twist to the storyline.
The rights to remake Gumrah were straightforward for Dharma Productions, as they also produced the original. This situation is reminiscent of how Dharma remade its 1990 film Agneepath in 2012, starring Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra.
Interestingly, Gumrah was directed by Mahesh Bhatt, and now his daughter, Alia, is leading the cast of this new adaptation. The creative lineage adds a layer of intrigue to the project.

Backed by Viacom18 Studios and Dharma Productions, Jigra is also a significant project for Alia and her sister, Shaheen Bhatt, through their production house, Eternal Sunshine Productions.
This film marks their second venture, following the success of Darlings in 2022. Directed by Vasan Bala, known for Monica, O My Darling (2022), Jigra is set to hit cinemas on October 11, just in time for the Dussehra festivities.
Alia’s Work Front
For Alia Bhatt, Jigra will be her sole release for 2024. However, fans have plenty to look forward to next year, with her set to appear in YRF’s Alpha and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love And War, where she will share screen space with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.
