Filmmaker Anees Bazmee is riding high on the massive success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Amid this, he has found himself at the centre of an unexpected controversy. His decades-old film, Naam, which was originally made in 2004, is set for a surprise release on November 22, 2024.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, with Bazmee sharing both his acceptance & concerns over the decision.
Anees Bazmee On His Name Being Used To Promote Naam
Naam, starring Ajay Devgn, Bhoomika Chawla, and Sameera Reddy, was shelved for nearly two decades. Now, its sudden revival has left Bazmee questioning the timing and approach.
“What can I do if the producers have decided to release an old project I had forgotten? I made this film in 2004. This is 2024, and everyone has moved on. It’s not just a disservice to me but to all involved,” he said in a recent statement to Bollywood Hungama.
Bazmee revealed that he hasn’t discussed the film’s release with Ajay Devgn. “No, I haven’t. I don’t see the need. Ajay too must have forgotten about it until now when the producers suddenly brought it out of the cans.”
The veteran director acknowledged the producers’ right to release the film but expressed hope they wouldn’t mislead audiences. “Aaj ka audience bahot hoshiyar hai. They cannot be taken for granted,” he added.
He noted that viewers today are highly discerning and unlikely to accept the film as a fresh release.
Despite the unusual situation, Bazmee has chosen to maintain a positive outlook. “If it helps the producers make even a bit of money, I am okay with it. I only hope they are not trying to pass it off as a new product.”
About The Film
Set to clash with Abhishek Bachchan and Shoojit Sircar’s I Want to Talk, Naam tells the story of a professional killer (Ajay Devgn), who loses his memory after a near-fatal accident. As he attempts to uncover his past, he becomes caught in a web of danger involving the CBI and persistent enemies. The action-packed thriller explores themes of self-discovery, redemption, and betrayal, promising a gripping narrative.
While Naam holds potential as a compelling thriller, its decades-old production raises questions about how it will resonate with today’s audiences.
