Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has landed in a fresh controversy. This time, it’s not about his films but a social media comment that stirred up a massive backlash.
The filmmaker has been booked for making what many are calling a “derogatory and casteist” remark about the Brahmin community.
Anurag Kashyap In Legal Trouble For Distasteful Remark On Brahmins
It all began when a user commented on one of Anurag’s posts and said, “Brahmins tumhare baap hain. Jitna tumhari unse sulgegi utna tumhari sulgaayenge.” To this, Anurag replied, “Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem?”
The comment sparked outrage online. Soon after, BJP leader and lawyer Ashutosh J. Dubey filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police. He also posted on X, “I have officially submitted a complaint to @MumbaiPolice seeking registration of an FIR against @anuragkashyap72 for his derogatory and casteist remark against the Brahmin community.”
He added, “Such hate speech cannot be tolerated in a civil society. The law must take its course.”
Filmmaker Shares An Apology Note
Anurag hasn’t responded to the FIR directly, but he did post a note on Instagram. He revealed that his daughter, family, friends, and colleagues are now facing rape and death threats because of the controversy.
He wrote, “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar (cultural values).”
The filmmaker also made it clear that he won’t take his words back. “So kahi hui baat wapis nahin li ja sakti our na loonga lekin mujhe jo gaali dena hai do.” He said that his family didn’t say anything and shouldn’t be dragged into the issue. He wrote, “Brahmin log, auraton ko baksh do, itna sanskar to shastron mein bhi hai.”
He captioned the note, “Manuwaadiyon aur gair sanskaari brahmino ke liye. Maafi.”
Anurag Kashyap Recently Spoke On Phule Censorship Controversy
This all comes just days before the release of Phule. The movie stars Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa and is based on the lives of reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule. Originally set to release on April 10, it was pushed to April 25 after some Brahmin groups objected to the film’s portrayal of their community.
Anurag had earlier voiced his frustration with the CBFC, too. He questioned how some people had already reacted to the film before it was even cleared or released. He also spoke about casteism and censorship in the country.
