Bhooth Bangla: Priyadarshan Says Akshay Kumar Is Lucky For Him, Promises A Folklore-rooted Horror Comedy

Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan’s reunion has already sparked major nostalgia among fans of their iconic comedy run, and now the filmmaker is adding a fresh layer to the excitement by teasing the film’s spiritual and mythic spine. With Bhooth Bangla gearing up for an April 10, 2026 theatrical release, Priyadarshan has opened up about why he considers Akshay his “lucky” charm and why this horror comedy is built on fantasy and Indian folklore rather than just jump scares and punchlines.

Priyadarshan On Akshay Being His Lucky Charm, And What Bhooth Bangla Is Really About

Speaking about the film’s core idea, Priyadarshan said, “Akshay Kumar is lucky for me. Bhooth Bangla, is rooted in fantasy and folklore. In our country, there are deep beliefs around supernatural ghosts, rituals, and even practices like black magic that still exist in certain parts, especially in villages. At the same time, when you look at quantum science, our Vedas, and ancient philosophies, they also explore fascinating ideas like the concept of the soul traveling beyond the body in search of knowledge.”

Priyadarshan also underlined that Bhooth Bangla aims to mirror how India has long held mythology, belief systems, and curiosity about science in the same cultural space. He pointed to concepts like Navagraha as an example of how old-world thought and celestial ideas have existed in Indian tradition for centuries, suggesting the film draws from that layered worldview.

The director’s comments land as a clear statement of intent: this is not a horror comedy that treats its supernatural canvas as a gimmick, but one that wants to play in a fantasy-driven universe shaped by local legends, rituals, and inherited fears.

Bhooth Bangla is directed by Priyadarshan and is set for a theatrical release on April 10, 2026. The cast includes Akshay Kumar, Tabu, Wamiqa Gabbi, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Jisshu Sengupta, with late actor Asrani also featuring. The film is produced by Akshay Kumar, Shobha Kapoor and Ektaa R Kapoor, backed by banners Cape of Good Films and Balaji Motion Pictures.
