Re-releases are the new craze and nostalgia is hitting the big screen again. After Tumbbad, Laila Majnu, and Sanam Teri Kasam, cult favourites Awarapan (2007) and Aashiqui 2 (2013) are making a comeback in cinemas.
Yes, you read that right! The two beloved films are set for a comeback to theatres.
Awarapan And Aashiqui 2 Confirmed To Re-Release
Salil Acharya confirmed the news during the MFN (Matrix Fight Night) 16 event. Speaking to HM Digital Reviews, he shared his excitement. “The re-release trend is working well, and it’s great. Awarapan was released nearly 17 years ago. It was an incredible experience shooting for it with Emraan Hashmi, Ashutosh Rana, and others. Hence, we all are very excited.
He added, “I spoke to Mohit Suri about it. Aashiqui 2 is also being re-released. He told me – Aapki dono filmein re-release ho rahi hai. I am waiting for it.”
Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan Returns After 17 Years
When Awarapan first hit theatres, it didn’t make big numbers. It clashed with Aap Ka Surroor, Apne, and Die Hard 4.0, which affected its box office run. However, over time, the film built a strong fan base. The gripping story, Emraan Hashmi’s intense performance, and its haunting soundtrack made it a cult favourite.
Directed by Mohit Suri, Awarapan follows a gangster who is assigned to watch over his boss’s mistress. But his past comes back to haunt him, forcing him into a battle of morality and redemption.
Salil Acharya recalled filming a key scene. “I had to shoot my death sequence in one shot. The time was limited. We were shooting outdoors, and the light was fading. Since I had done television extensively, I was ready for it. Awarapan was a physically demanding film.”
Aashiqui 2 Eyes Another BLOCKBUSTER Run
Unlike Awarapan, Aashiqui 2 was a blockbuster when it was released in 2013. The film, directed by Mohit Suri, starred Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor in a tragic love story. It followed a self-destructive singer who helps a rising talent but struggles with his own demons. The emotional depth and soul-stirring music made it a fan favourite.
The re-release trend has worked well for underrated films. Sanam Teri Kasam, which underperformed in its original run, made nearly Rs 50 crore when re-released. Now, with Awarapan and Aashiqui 2 returning to cinemas, it will be interesting to see how audiences respond.
