Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap (known for his work in Gangs of Wasseypur) is now making headlines in the South Indian film industry. He recently appeared as the antagonist in Aashiq Abu’s Malayalam action thriller Rifle Club. This film marks Kashyap’s acting debut in regional cinema. Known for his outspoken nature, Kashyap shared some strong views about Bollywood and its differences from the South film industry.
Bollywood Is Obsessed With Crores – Anurag Kashyap
In an interview with Gulf News, Kashyap criticised Bollywood’s focus on box-office numbers and its reliance on formulas. “Hindi doesn’t have the courage to do a movie like this,” he said about Rifle Club. “Bollywood is about making Rs 500-600 crores; they are obsessed with box office crores. It’s destroying cinema, and everything is becoming a formula.”
He added that selling new ideas in Bollywood has become a challenge. “They will just tell me, ‘I don’t know if this will work or not because there’s no reference for it.’ I can only sell a film saying that it’s like that blockbuster,” he explained.
Why Kashyap Chooses The South
Kashyap shared that he feels more comfortable working in South Indian cinema. “In Bollywood, they look at me like I am the enemy of the state. But here, I get so much love and respect from the audience, filmmakers, and filmmaking community,” he said. “I’m happier. I’ve found my tribe here. The people are real.”
The filmmaker also highlighted differences in how the two industries operate. “In Bollywood, after the shot is over, actors retreat to their vanity vans, busy with social media or meetings. They are not into the film, and we have to create chemistry. In the South, there’s no star system. Actors stay together, even when they are not giving a shot. This creates magic on screen,” he explained.
Kashyap’s role as a Mangalore-based arms dealer in Rifle Club has earned him widespread praise. Earlier this year, he also gained recognition for playing a villain in the Tamil hit Maharaja, featuring Vijay Sethupathi.
Now, Kashyap is working on another project with Malayalam actor Indrajith Sukumaran.
