Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is making its debut in Punjabi cinema with Akaal, a historic epic starring Gippy Grewal. It marks a major milestone as the film will be released in both Punjabi and Hindi. It is also the first Punjabi film to get a nationwide Hindi release, expanding its reach beyond regional audiences.
Dharma has previously backed South Indian films like Baahubali and Devara. Now, the production house is stepping into Punjabi storytelling to further establish itself as a pan-India force. Akaal aims to bring the rich history of Sikh warriors to a wider audience.

Akaal is written and directed by Gippy Grewal and stars a power-packed cast, including Nimrat Khaira, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Nikitin Dheer, Mita Vashisht, Shinda Grewal, and more. Backed by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Bhumika Tewari, Gippy Grewal, and Ravneet Kaur Grewal, Akaal will be a true grand Baisakhi spectacle. The magnum opus will be theatrically released on April 10, 2025

The trailer of Akaal is out. Karan Johar has ventured into the Punjabi film industry with this movie.
The film is about the rise of the Khalsas, the warrior clan of the Sikhs. In the movie, we see how the Khalsas fight with tribal lords who invade territories from the Northwest of the country. The movie is based on historical facts and how bravely the Sikhs fought to defend the nation against tribal lords. Akaal has been shot on a big scale and the locations demand a second viewing.
Karan Johar Expresses Happiness For His Association With Akaal
Karan Johar said that Akaal is a tribute to his father’s Punjabi roots. He said his dad grew up in Lahore, Punjab, Shimla and spoke Punjabi. However, as his mother was a Sindhi, the language spoken at home was Hindi and English. He said he is glad to partner with Gippy Grewal who is one of the biggest producers, directors and actors of the of the industry. His son Shinda Grewal is also a part of the film.
The trailer of Akaal has some big fight sequences and we can see that even Nimrat Khaira seems to love the stunt scenes. Akaal has Nikitin Dheer as the villain. This is his second movie with Dharma after Shershaah. He said his father Pankaj Dheer has worked with Gippy Grewal and when he got the call he instantly came on board.
