‘Disgusted’ Anurag Kashyap To Move Out Of Mumbai & Relocate In South, Claims Bollywood Can Never Make Film Like Pushpa

Anurag Kashyap plans to leave Bollywood and relocate to South India, citing disappointment with the industry’s lack of creativity.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is planning to leave Bollywood and move to South India. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, he shared his disappointment with the Hindi film industry, calling it “disgusting” and “disappointing.” Kashyap explained that his decision stems from a desire for creative growth and dissatisfaction with Bollywood’s current environment.

Anurag Kashyap Tired Of ‘Godlike’ Egos In Bollywood

Kashyap expressed admiration for South Indian filmmakers and their ability to take risks and support innovative storytelling. “I envy them,” he said.

He added, “It’s difficult for me to experiment now because everything comes at a cost. Producers only think about profit margins. The joy of filmmaking gets sucked out. That’s why I want to move out. Next year, I’m literally moving out of Mumbai.”

He criticised Bollywood for its dependence on remakes and predictable formulas. Using Manjummel Boys as an example, he said such films would only be made in Hindi after they succeeded in another language.

“Hindi cinema doesn’t want to create anything original. They only pick up projects with a reference point,” he said.

Filmmaker Says Bollywood Can Never Make A Film Like Pushpa

Kashyap didn’t shy away from pointing out Bollywood’s inability to create films like Pushpa. He noted that South Indian filmmakers like Sukumar are supported by their industry in enabling creativity and originality.

He praised Suresh Babu for empowering first-time filmmakers and said, “He has empowered so many first-time filmmakers. He talks commerce with a vision. But here in Bollywood, it’s all about formulas and universes. It’s arrogance to think you’re God because you’re creating a universe.”

Anurag Kashyap Also Criticises Game Changer Directo Shankar

While praising South Indian cinema, Kashyap also critiqued some trends. He questioned filmmaker S Shankar’s approach to Game Changer, designed to resemble the fast-paced style of Instagram Reels.

“When filmmakers start thinking of what the audience wants, they’ve signed up for failure,” he said, suggesting that some filmmakers are losing their originality.

Why Is Anurag Disappointed In Bollywood?

Kashyap’s disillusionment is partly due to his unreleased film Kennedy, which is stuck with Zee Studios. He said he has detached himself from the film’s outcome, learning not to let setbacks affect him, as they did earlier in his career.

Currently, Kashyap is taking on acting roles in South Indian films. He admitted that part of his motivation is financial, as he prepares for his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap’s wedding. Recently, he appeared in Rifle Club and Viduthalai Part 2, marking his growing involvement in the South Indian film industry.
