Ek Hasina Thi Ek Diwana Tha: How Akshay Ranjan Turns Evergreen Bollywood Songs Into A Brand New Audio Love Story

Some songs survive every generational shift, and Akshay Ranjan’s Ek Hasina Thi Ek Diwana Tha is built on exactly that emotional truth. The musician, arranger and storyteller has launched a three chapter musical audio story that takes beloved Hindi film melodies and places them inside an entirely new romance, proving that nostalgia can do more than trigger memory, it can carry fresh drama. The project is positioned as a streaming release across Spotify, Amazon Music and JioSaavn, with a dedicated Linktree hub bringing the title together across platforms.

The Latest Musical Storytelling Experiment

At the heart of Ek Hasina Thi Ek Diwana Tha is a simple but striking creative reversal. Instead of writing songs to support a pre-existing screenplay, Ranjan uses familiar songs as the emotional architecture of a new narrative. Set against the backdrop of Paris, the audio story unfolds across themes of betrayal, love, loss, hope and commitment, with classic Hindi melodies serving as the characters’ inner language rather than standalone retro recreations.

The project follows the same storytelling philosophy that shaped Ranjan’s earlier Baarish, Mumbai Aur…, where evergreen tracks such as Deewana Hua Badal, Mere Saamne Waali Khidki and Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par were re-arranged to fit a new fictional world. On Amazon Music, Ranjan’s artist credits include his 2026 releases tied to these classic reinterpretations, confirming his continued focus on reworking vintage songs through a contemporary audio lens.

Akshay Ranjan’s Idea Is About Reinvention, Not Remixing

What makes this format stand out is that it does not pitch itself as a remix album. Ranjan’s intent is to preserve the emotional identity of the originals while changing the dramatic meaning around them. As he puts it, “My main goal with the songs was to not lose the original soul of these melodies, but at the same time infuse them with a new life, ensuring that they seamlessly blend into the new story.”

That approach is especially visible in the treatment of Tum Mujhe Yun Bhula Na Paoge, which becomes a key emotional beat in the new narrative. The reinterpretation folds in classical sargams, western voiceovers and orchestral textures, expanding the original song into a more cinematic listening experience without stripping away its familiar emotional pull.

A Tribute To Hindi Cinema’s Musical Legacy

Ek Hasina Thi Ek Diwana Tha also doubles as a tribute to some of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated composers and lyricists, including Shankar Jaikishan, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Hasrat Jaipuri and Anand Bakshi. That lineage gives the project both cultural weight and instant recall, while its audio first format lets listeners imagine the scenes rather than watch them on screen.

Ranjan, a Sangeet Visharad in Hindustani Classical Music and a former Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa semi-finalist, has conceived, written, arranged and produced the project, making this as much an auteur led audio experience as it is a music release.
