Emergency Certification: Major Cuts Made To Bhindranwale References, Violence Toned Down In Kangana Ranaut Starrer

Kangana Ranaut starrer Emergency has received major cuts from the CBFC with violence toned down. Read to know in detail!

Kangana Ranaut has faced significant challenges getting her directorial debut, Emergency, approved for release. This biopic about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is finally set to hit theatres, but not without substantial changes.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has mandated several cuts to the film, particularly regarding references to controversial figures and violent scenes.

CBFC Reduces Bhindranwale’s Reference & Tones Down Violence In Emergency

Sources close to the CBFC revealed to mid-day that many edits were made to lessen references to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a key figure in the 1980s. For example, in one scene, his name has been replaced with “Woh.” In another instance, the chant “Sant Bhindranwale Zindabad” was simplified to just “Zindabad.” A significant moment where Bhindranwale asserts he isn’t a puppet of the Congress party has also been altered.

The board’s decision to tone down violence in the film has led to the complete removal of a sequence involving gunfire in front of a bus. These changes reflect ongoing concerns from various Sikh groups, which have accused the film of misrepresenting their community and inciting social discord.

To address these concerns, the CBFC insisted that all documentary evidence used in the film be presented clearly, along with the sources of any archival footage. Additionally, the disclaimer attached to the film has been modified to clarify that while the movie is inspired by true events, it includes dramatic transformations.

Disclaimer Modified, 35-Secs Cut & 28-Secs Footage Replaced From Kangana Ranaut Starrer

The source explained that the revised disclaimer now states, “though the film is inspired by true events, dramatic transformation has been added.” This adjustment aims to mitigate potential backlash and ensure viewers understand the creative liberties taken in the storytelling.

Furthermore, the filmmakers provided factual references for certain scenes, including one featuring a remark by Jawaharlal Nehru about Assam and another involving a discussion between Sanjay Gandhi and Giani Zail Singh.

Overall, approximately 35 seconds of footage has been cut, with an additional 28 seconds being replaced to align with the board’s guidelines. These changes demonstrate the delicate balance filmmakers must strike when depicting historical events, especially those involving sensitive topics.

For the unversed, Kangana Ranaut is yet to announce the new release date of Emergency. It also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry & others in key roles.
