Emergency: Chandigarh Court Issues Legal Notice To Kangana Ranaut Over Controversial Sikh Portrayal; Response Demanded By December 5

Emergency lands in another trouble amid release hold as Chandigarh court has issued legal notice to Kangana Ranaut.

A Chandigarh court has issued notices to Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut and other key figures involved in the production of Emergency.

The notices follow a complaint alleging that the film, directed by Ranaut, misrepresents the Sikh community and portrays the former Jathedar of the Akal Takth, a revered Sikh religious leader, as a “terrorist.”

The complaint, filed by Advocate Ravinder Singh Bassi, who heads the NGO Lawyers for Humanity, claims that Emergency inaccurately depicts historical events and disrespects Sikh sentiments.

Bassi Criticises Emergency Trailer For False Portrayal Of Jathedar

Bassi mentions that the film’s portrayal of the Jathedar in its trailer is factually incorrect. He stated, “The accused, without studying proper historical facts, had portrayed Sikhs in a negative light and falsely alleged that the sitting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takth Sahib was demanding a separate state. This depiction is completely false and intended to malign the image of Sikhs and the Akal Takth Jathedars.”

The petition also claims that this portrayal “hurts the sentiments and feelings of the Sikh community in general and the deponent.” It accuses Ranaut of disseminating misleading information that could fuel communal tensions.

An FIR Against Kangana Ranaut Requested

Bassi has requested that an FIR be lodged against Ranaut and two other respondents under various sections of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. These sections include charges of promoting religious enmity and spreading false information that could threaten India’s unity and sovereignty.

The Chandigarh court has demanded that Kangana Ranaut and the other respondents submit their responses by December 5, 2024. This deadline will be crucial in determining the next steps in the legal proceedings.

In addition to the legal issues, Emergency is currently facing delays in its release. The film’s certification is on hold, as it has not yet been cleared by the Censor Board.

Emergency Put On Hold Due To Several Issues

Originally slated for release on September 6, 2024, the political period drama, which is also written and co-produced by Ranaut, has been mired in controversy.

Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, have accused the film of “misrepresenting the community” and “getting facts wrong,” further complicating its path to the big screen.
