Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated film Emergency is facing a significant delay. The film, which was set to release on September 6, has been postponed due to issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The political drama, directed and produced by Ranaut, depicts the life of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, focusing on the 1975 Emergency period and her assassination by her bodyguards.
The trailer, released on August 14, sparked controversy and led to calls for a ban. Concerns were raised by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and various Sikh groups, who allege that the film misrepresents historical facts and could incite communal tensions.
CBFC DEMANDS Removal Of Indira Gandhi Assassination Scene From Emergency?
Initially, the CBFC had cleared the film on August 29, with a U/A certificate. The board had suggested some modifications, including changes to specific dialogue and factual updates.
However, after receiving a legal notice from SAD on August 30, the CBFC reversed its decision. As per a mid-day report, the board’s new directive includes the controversial request to omit the depiction of Gandhi’s assassination.
Ranaut, who also stars in the film, has expressed her disappointment over this development. In a recent podcast, she said, “An Emergency has been imposed on my film now… I’m disappointed with how things are unfolding here.” She questioned why historically accurate content should be removed if it is factually documented.
Makers Addressing CBFC’s New Demands & Looking For New Release Date
A trade source revealed that the film’s team was surprised by the CBFC’s sudden change of stance. The CBFC had previously listed suggested changes on its website but did not issue the film’s certificate. The filmmakers are now seeking to address the CBFC’s new demands and are looking for an alternative release date.
Former CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani commented that delays like these are frequent under the current CBFC leadership. He suggested that the government may be worried about how the film might affect public sentiments and is therefore postponing its release.
