The sequel to the blockbuster film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, has been breaking box office records since its release on August 11, 2023. However, the film has also landed in a controversy over its music. Uttam Singh, the veteran composer who created the songs and background score for the original Gadar in 2001, has alleged that the makers of Gadar 2 have used his work without his permission.
In an interview with Amar Ujala, Singh expressed his disappointment and said, “They didn’t call me for Gadar 2 and I don’t have the habit of calling and asking for work. They have used two of my songs in the film and I have also heard that they have used the background music that I composed. They should at least have the etiquette to ask me once and talk to me before using my songs in the film.”
Two popular songs from Gadar recreated by Mithoon for Gadar 2
The two songs that Singh is referring to are Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava and Main Nikla Gaddi Leke, which were chartbusters in 2001 and contributed a lot to the success of Gadar. The songs have been recreated by Mithoon, the music composer of Gadar 2, with some changes in the arrangements and lyrics. The film also utilises parts of the background score from the first one.
Singh, who is also the brother of late ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, has composed music for several films such as Dil To Pagal Hai, Dushman, Pinjar, and Baghban. He said that he was not aware of the use of his songs in Gadar 2 until he saw the film’s trailer. He also said that he has not received any royalty or credit for his work.

Gadar 2 makers have not responded to Singh’s allegations
The makers of Gadar 2 have not issued any statement or clarification regarding Singh’s allegations so far. The film’s director Anil Sharma and producer Nitin Keni have not commented on the matter. Mithoon, who has been praised for his music in Gadar 2, has also not responded to Singh’s claims.
Gadar 2 has earned over Rs 420 crore net at the domestic box office, becoming the second-highest-grossing Bollywood film ever in India. Only Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan stands ahead of it now. The film has also crossed Rs 500 crore worldwide and has been declared an all-time blockbuster.
