Film producer and Zee Studios distribution head Girish Johar is calling for a major change in how box office collections are reported amid the evolving film industry.
He believes that Bollywood should start using Gross Box Office figures for all films, especially Hindi films, from now on. He also confirmed that Zee Studios will be adopting the approach for all of their future projects.
Johar explained, “I strongly recommend that going forward, collections of all films, especially Hindi films, be reported in Gross Box Office figures rather than Net.”
He added, “The international market, including Hollywood and China as well as major Indian film industries like Tamil, Telugu, report Gross figures. Aligning with this practice ensures better comparison and strengthens Bollywood’s global position.”
Girish Johar On How Net Figures Create Confusion
Johar said that reporting Net Box Office numbers creates confusion. This happens because taxes like GST are different in every state. Gross collections, however, are simple and consistent across India.
He explained, “Net box office figures can differ from source to source. Gross collections, however, remain uniform and easy to track, avoiding discrepancies in media reports. Also, tax collected by our film’s ticket sales at the Box Office windows is also an actual representation of the consumer payout.”
Gross Figures Have Better Appeal
Johar believes Gross figures look better and help films attract bigger deals. He said these numbers build confidence among buyers and investors.
He said, “Higher standardised reported numbers create stronger appeal for satellite, digital, and overseas rights buyers, maximizing post-theatrical revenues. A well-marketed Gross figure adds weight to the film’s commercial success, leading to better deals.”
He also pointed out that Gross figures create more buzz. Bigger numbers impress both the public and the media.
Johar said, “Gross figures appear larger and more impactful, creating a stronger buzz among audiences and media.”
Girish Johar Highlights Big Films Using Gross Figures In Announcements
He added that many big Hindi films have already started using Gross figures in their announcements. “Recent trends indicate that leading Hindi films have started using Gross figures for official announcements, ensuring maximum impact and visibility,” he noted.
In closing, Johar made his stance crystal clear. He concluded, “Given these advantages, I strongly suggest that all official box office updates for Hindi films emphasise Gross Collections. We at Zee shall be reporting Gross Box Office figures going forward.”
