Known for memorable hits such as Aankhen, Namastey London, and Commando, renowned filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah is venturing into a much darker genre of political drama with his next big project — Governor. The film stars Manoj Bajpayee in the titular role and is said to be a riveting political thriller based on the real life of a former governor of a state.
As per reports, the film is set to go on the floors in August 2025, starting with a 40-day schedule in Mumbai and two other cities, and they will be shooting the film in two other different states.
Based On A Real Political Figure — But Still Under Wraps
Governor will be directed by Chinmay Mandlekar, with Shah producing under his banner Sunshine Pictures and co-producing with Aashin A. Shah. Insiders working on the film have confirmed that the story is based on the life of a real former governor who died in 2024. As legalities and paperwork are still being done, the production remains discreet on who this person is.
“It is based on a former governor. The paperwork is ongoing, so the makers are trying to be discreet regarding the reference,” along with the source who relayed this information.
This film will also mark the first collaboration between Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Manoj Bajpayee, whose pairing has already raised the bar in trade and audience expectations.
Script Backed by Powerful Team Of Writers
Governor started with a concept created by Shah himself. He later enlisted a powerful writing team of Suvendu Bhattacharjee, Saurabh Bharat, and Ravi Asrani.
Shah has taken advantage of his success track record with socially and politically backed stories, alongside Bajpayee’s intense screen presence, declared last seen in the highly popular Joram and The Family Man series; with Governor we can look ahead to an exciting combination of character-driven drama with politics.
What Else Is On Shah’s Slate?
In addition to Governor, Shah is also preparing to direct Hisaab, which is a heist-thriller film featuring Jaideep Ahlawat and Shefali Shah. Hisaab is backed by Sunshine Pictures and Jio Studios and is slated for release in late 2025; this also provides Shah with one of his busiest and most ambitiously creative years.
