Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has fired back at a news portal for what he calls a “ridiculous” comparison of the OTT viewership of his film The Buckingham Murders with Kriti Sanon and Kajol’s Do Patti.
The issue arose after a report claimed that Do Patti, which was released directly on Netflix on October 25, garnered significantly more viewership than The Buckingham Murders, despite the latter starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and releasing in theatres first.
Hansal Mehta Calls Out News Portal For The Illogical Comparison
On November 13, Mehta took to his official X account to call out the news outlet that had compared the two films. The comparison in question suggested that Kareena’s portrayal of a woman investigating a child’s murder in The Buckingham Murders failed to surpass Kriti’s performance in Do Patti on OTT.
The controversial report from Koimoi noted that The Buckingham Murders had 42% lower viewership than Do Patti. While Do Patti reportedly achieved 5 million views, The Buckingham Murders garnered 2.9 million. However, Mehta was quick to point out the flaws in the comparison, stating that the streaming days for the films were not taken into account.

Mehta also highlighted that despite the fewer streaming days, The Buckingham Murders managed to crack the top five on Netflix’s global charts in just a couple of days of its release.

The filmmaker’s sharp response stressed that such comparisons didn’t do justice to the films or the performances, especially considering the different release strategies.
About The Buckingham Murders
In The Buckingham Murders, Kareena plays Jasmeet Bhamra, a British Indian detective investigating the murder of a young child. The film also marked Kareena’s debut as a producer, alongside Shobha Kapoor and Ektaa Kapoor.
The film had its world premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival in October 2023 and later debuted on Netflix on November 8, following a September theatre release. However, it failed to create an impact at the box office.
