Netflix India has just released the trailer for IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, a mini-series exploring the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814. Premiering on August 29, 2024, the series boasts an impressive cast, including Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapur, and Patralekhaa.
This is also the OTT debut of director Anubhav Sinha, known for his powerful dramas like Mulk, Thappad, Article 15, and Bheed.

The trailer offers a gripping look at the dramatic events of the hijacking, highlighting the intense situation as 188 passengers’ lives were at risk. It shows the hijackers’ increasing demands and the Indian government’s urgent attempts to negotiate. The series aims to provide an honest and detailed portrayal of the crisis and the diplomatic tensions involved.
One of the most intense scenes in the trailer features the plane running critically low on fuel. Vijay Varma’s character, the captain, faces a dire situation as he issues a frantic ‘Mayday’ call. This moment underlines the immense pressure and scrutiny faced by the captain during the ordeal.
About The Kandahar Hijack Incident
The Kandahar hijack occurred in December 1999 when militants seized Indian Airlines Flight 814, flying from Kathmandu to Delhi. The plane was rerouted to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where the standoff continued for several days. This period was marked by complex negotiations and diplomatic efforts to resolve the situation.
Anubhav Sinha, known for his impactful films, stressed the importance of authenticity in depicting this complicated story. At the Next on Netflix event in Mumbai, he said, “When I started doing research, almost everyone remembers a few things about the hijack, and what all happened during the process. I realised it is a very complex story and a lot of things happened in those seven days and not many people know about it.”
