The much-anticipated sequel, Indian 2, has kicked off its pre-sales in India, signalling a hopeful start for the filmmakers. Initial reports indicate that the film has garnered Rs 7 crore in pre-sales for its first day, with weekend figures reaching around Rs 11 crore.
Compared to previous blockbuster releases like Vikram and Jailer, Indian 2 has not matched the same level of initial rush in Tamil Nadu, where pre-sales are noted to be less than half of its predecessors.
This performance is seen as somewhat disappointing given the sequel’s potential. The original Indian, released in 1996, was a monumental success, grossing Rs 58 crore domestically and nearly Rs 65 crore worldwide, equivalent to over Rs 1000 crore in today’s market.
Indian 2 is set to clash with Akshay Kumar‘s Sarfira. The film’s marketing efforts have been extensive, targeting maximum audience engagement across all regions, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where it enjoys a strong fan base.
Performance Of Indian 2 Heavily Depends On Word-Of-Mouth
The success of Indian 2 now heavily hinges on audience reception, especially considering its substantial production costs. Similar to Shankar’s 2.0, which faced a slow start but eventually gained traction, Indian 2 aims to capture audience interest and sustain momentum throughout its theatrical run.
Internationally, Indian 2 indicates a more promising start with nearly USD 1.50 million in sales on its first day, including previews. However, there is acknowledged potential for even greater international success.
