Kamal Haasan‘s much-awaited film, Indian 2, finally hit screens across India on Friday amidst high expectations but faced a mixed reception from critics and audiences alike.
After a decent opening, It encountered a slight decline in its box office collections on its second day in theatres. The film has amassed a commendable Rs 42 crore in its initial days of release across India.
Indian 2 Box Office Collection Declines On Day 2
On its opening day, Indian 2 garnered Rs 25.6 crore, with Tamil Nadu contributing Rs 16.5 crore, Hindi markets adding Rs 1.2 crore, and Telugu regions earning Rs 7.9 crore.
The second day saw a dip, accumulating Rs 16.7 crore, with Tamil Nadu bringing in Rs 13 crore, Hindi markets Rs 1.0 crore, and Telugu areas Rs 2.5 crore. As of now, the film has accumulated a total of Rs 42.1 crore, with Tamil Nadu leading at Rs 29.5 crore, followed by Hindi markets at Rs 2.2 crore, and Telugu regions at Rs 10.4 crore.
Despite its release along with another film Sarfira starring Akshay Kumar, the storm of Kalki 2898 AD remains unstoppable as the Prabhas starrer is still witnessing great footfall in theatres in this 3rd week.
About The Film
Indian 2 continues the legacy of its predecessor Indian, released in 1996, which starred Kamal Haasan as the iconic character Veerasekaran Senapathy. The sequel reunites Kamal Haasan and director S Shankar, featuring a stellar cast including Samuthirakani, Bobby Simha, Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, and Priya Bhavani Shankar.
The first look poster of Indian 2 was unveiled during the Pongal festival in 2020, generating significant buzz among fans. With music composed by Anirudh Ravichander and screenplay by Jayamohan, Kabilan Vairamuthu, and Lakshmi Saravanakumar, the film is produced by Lyca Productions and hit theatres nationwide on July 12.
In Indian 2, Kamal Haasan reprises his role as Senapathy, affectionately known as Indian Thatha, who combats corruption using the ancient Indian martial art form of ‘Varma kalai.’ The decision to bring back Senapathy, now 106 years old in the storyline, sparked curiosity and questions during promotional events.
During a press conference in Mumbai, Kamal Haasan humorously expressed his desire to continue acting even at the age of 120. Director S Shankar defended the decision, citing examples of martial artists like Lu Zijian from China who performed martial arts even at the age of 120. “Senapathy is a master of ‘Varma,’ an ancient martial art,” Shankar explained.
