Indian 2 Director Shankar Issues Warning Over Copyright Infringement In A Cryptic Post: Is It For Makers Of Devara?

Shankar expresses concern over unauthorised adaptations from his novel Nava Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari, hinting at potential legal action against filmmakers.

Director S Shankar is making headlines with a cryptic post that has fans speculating about potential copyright issues involving the upcoming film Devara.

The acclaimed filmmaker, known for his attention to detail and respect for source material, has expressed his discontent with the unauthorised use of scenes from the Tamil novel Nava Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari by other filmmakers.

During the promotional events for Indian 2, Shankar shared his admiration for the novel by S Venkatesan, which he discovered during the COVID-19 lockdown. He mentioned that the novel deeply resonated with him and inspired him to adapt it into a screenplay, aiming to create a three-part film franchise.

However, recent developments have led him to take a stand against filmmakers who, according to him, have misused key scenes from the novel without permission.

Shankar Issues Warning Against Unauthorised Use In A Cryptic Post

On September 22, Shankar took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to voice his concerns. In a lengthy post, he made it clear that he holds the copyright for the novel and is disturbed by its unauthorized adaptations.

He wrote, “Attention to all! As the copyright holder of Su. Venkatesan’s iconic Tamil novel Nava Yuga Nayagan Vel Paari, I’m disturbed to see key scenes being ripped off & used without permission in many movies. Really upset to see an important key scene from the novel in a recent movie trailer. Kindly refrain from using the scenes from the novel in movies, web series and any medium. Respect creators’ rights! Refrain from unauthorised adaptations of scenes, refrain from infringement or face legal action!”

Shankar’s post raised eyebrows, especially after the recent trailer release for Devara: Part 1. Netizens speculate that his warning is directed at this film, suggesting that it may have borrowed elements from his beloved novel. Some have also named Kanguva and Vettaiyan.

The timing of his statement has only intensified the buzz around Devara and its connection to Shankar’s work.

Indian 2 Director On Plans Of Adapting The Novel

At the Indian 2 event, Shankar elaborated on his plans for adapting the novel, stating, “I read the highly acclaimed Velpari novel during the COVID lockdown time and loved it very much. Immediately, I started to write it as a screenplay and completed it. I plan to make it a three-part film franchise.” His commitment to a faithful adaptation indicates that he is not only protective of his rights but also passionate about delivering a quality project.
