Is THIS Sequence In Sholay Lifted From The Hollywood Western Once Upon A Time In The West?

Sholay is hands down the most iconic film in the history of Indian cinema. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, the film was released in 1975 and even today’s being watched, discussed, dissected, and loved by people across the nation. Every single scene, character, dialogue, and sequence of the film has become a part of our pop culture and is referenced by everyone.

We all remember the scene where Gabbar Singh (played by Amjad Khan) shoots and kills every family member of Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar). Even though it is an iconic scene from the film, it’s actually copied from Sergio Leonne’s 1968 Western film Once Upon A Time in the West. On Monday, actor Adil Hussain took to Twitter to share a clip from the spaghetti western.

It was accompanied by his tweet which read, “Ha ha… Who would have thought that portions of one of the most watched/ Admired films in India will be a copy of this film below… Probably you already knew that!? .. But didn’t..” The scene in the clip is almost identical to the scene where Gabbar kills Thakur’s family.

Several people responded to Adil’s tweet, expressing their shock or disappointment with his revelation. Ranvir Shorey shared a funny GIF.

After Adil responded to laughing emoji’s, Ranvir wrote another Tweet and said, “And then they wonder why it’s called “Bollywood”…” Some users pointed out that the scene itself was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Japanese period film Seven Samurai.
