‘It Has A Potential’: Madhur Bhandarkar CONFIRMS He’s Working On Fashion 2, Hasn’t Decided If It Will Be A Film Or A Web Show

Madhur Bhandarkar, the acclaimed filmmaker known for his hard-hitting stories, has officially confirmed the buzz surrounding a sequel to his 2008 hit, Fashion.

The original film, which delved into the glamorous yet gritty world of modelling, featured powerhouse performances by Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut, both of whom earned National Awards for their roles. Now, 16 years later, Bhandarkar is exploring the idea of returning to this world, but with a fresh perspective.

Speaking recently during the 25th-anniversary celebration of his debut film Trishakti (1999), Bhandarkar opened up about his plans for Fashion 2.

Madhur Bhandarkar CONFIRMS Fashion 2, Says It’s In Early Stages

He shared that the project is still in its early stages and that he is undecided on whether it will be a film or a web series. “I feel Fashion has all the potential for a sequel. Today, the world of fashion has changed. As a filmmaker, I feel I have a lot of material, and hence, it can be turned into a show, spanning a couple of seasons. But it also is apt for a film. Hence, nothing has been decided yet,” Bhandarkar said.

Bhandarkar hinted at the direction Fashion 2 might take. He expressed a desire to explore the impact of social media on the fashion industry, particularly how it has shifted the spotlight from supermodels to Bollywood celebrities and influencers.

“Social media has completely taken over. There was a time when we used to hear of supermodels. But in the last few years, can you recall the name of any supermodel? Bollywood celebs have taken over and have become showstoppers. This is what I want to ask through Fashion 2—where have these supermodels disappeared? A girl sitting in some small town can be a model or an influencer. I want to focus on these aspects,” he explained.

About Fashion

The original Fashion was more than just a film; it was a commentary on the darker side of the fashion industry. It followed the journey of Meghna Mathur, played by Priyanka Chopra, a small-town girl who rises to become a supermodel, only to face the harsh realities that come with the territory. Kangana Ranaut’s portrayal of Shonali Gujral, a top model who spirals into self-destruction, was equally compelling. Both characters reflected the highs and lows of an industry that is often seen as glamorous but is also rife with challenges.
