Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared his thoughts on why some big-budget movies are failing at the box office. In an interview with Humans of Cinema, Kashyap pointed a finger at the extravagant demands of actors and their entourages. He suggested that these are major factors draining production budgets.

Kashyap highlighted that a significant portion of the budget for many films isn’t spent on the actual filmmaking process but rather on catering to the whims of the stars. “I had never seen so many vanity vans on my set like I saw on Sacred Games… That’s how the culture got started. Then you can’t reverse that,” he explained.

While he acknowledged that technical crew members, who were often overlooked, are now receiving fair compensation, he stressed that the additional expenses are getting out of hand.
Kashyap emphasised that filmmaking is hard work and not a luxury experience. He expressed frustration over the amount of money wasted on non-essential items. “They aren’t spending on just the film. One thing people need to understand is that when we make a film, we’re working, we’re creating something. It’s not a holiday, it’s not a picnic,” he said.
He further illustrated this by describing scenarios where production teams would go to great lengths to satisfy actors’ demands, such as sending a car on a long journey to fetch a specific five-star burger.
Kashyap’s comments come at a time when several high-profile films have underperformed at the box office. He believes that reining in the excesses could help redirect funds back into the filmmaking process, potentially improving the final product and its reception.
Kashyap also shared updates on his upcoming film. The project boasts an impressive cast, including Malayalam actor Joju George, who will be making his Hindi film debut.
The ensemble also features Bobby Deol, Sanya Malhotra, Sapna Pabbi, Riddhi Sen, Ankush Gedam, and Nagesh Bhonsle. In May, Kashyap confirmed the cast by sharing a screenshot from a publication.
