Karan Johar and Kajol have been close friends for a long time, and their friendship has endured many ups and downs. During an interview with Simi Garewal on her talk show Rendezvous With Simi Garewal, Karan Johar shared a moment that cemented their friendship for life. It was when Kajol refused to work with Mani Ratnam because she had already committed to Karan Johar for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Karan Johar revealed that Kajol was a big Mani Ratnam fan and had expressed her desire to work with him. When Mani Ratnam actually called her to offer a film with Shah Rukh Khan, she didn’t believe it. She thought Karan was playing a prank on her and disconnected the call. But Mani Ratnam called her again and convinced her that he was serious.
This was when Kajol had already signed Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with Karan and they were supposed to start shooting soon. Shah Rukh had to intervene and convince Kajol that Mani Ratnam really called her. He told her that he was telling the truth, and it really was Mani Ratnam who had called her. Then he called Karan to inform him that Kajol had been offered a film by Mani Ratnam opposite him but it was clashing with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Karan said, “I called Kajol and said I will let go of my dates and will start my film later, how can you not do Mani Ratnam film? But for her, it was like, ‘I don’t care who has offered me what, it’s your film and I have committed to you’. The sentiment was that. For her, it was not a big deal. But that’s what made a difference for me. I just kind of understood what kind of a person she is.”
Karan offered to let go of his dates and start his film later so that Kajol could do the Mani Ratnam film, but Kajol chose Kuch Kuch Hota Hai over the other film. She never got another chance to work with Mani Ratnam again. However, Karan Johar was deeply touched by Kajol’s loyalty and commitment to him. He said that he understood what kind of person she was and that it made a difference to him.
Kajol explained that for her, it was not a big deal. She had committed to Karan Johar, and she stood by her commitment. She had full confidence in Karan’s filmmaking skills and believed that he could make good films. She met Mani Ratnam after that and told him that she hoped he didn’t take it in the wrong way, but she had to do what she had to do.
