Sanya Malhotra starrer Mrs has sparked intense discussions about patriarchy and marriage. The film, which follows the struggles of a newlywed woman navigating the rigid traditions of a joint family, has been widely appreciated for its bold take on gender roles. However, not everyone is impressed. Kangana Ranaut recently shared a series of cryptic Instagram stories that appeared to criticise the film for allegedly ‘corrupting’ perspectives on marriage.
Kangana Ranaut Criticises Sanya Malhotra’s Mrs
Without directly naming Mrs, Kangana slammed films that ‘promote divorces’ and questioned the portrayal of Indian families in cinema. Her posts quickly caught the internet’s attention, with many linking her comments to the ongoing debate surrounding the film.
In her first post, Kangana recalled about her upbringing and the role of women in Indian households. She claimed that growing up, she never saw a woman who did not command her household. She described how women dictated meal times, sleeping schedules, and outings, while also keeping track of their husband’s expenses. According to her, joint family women were like ‘ultimate queens.’ While issues may exist, they should not be generalised.
She then shifted focus to the institution of marriage itself. She argued that marriages are not about seeking attention or validation but exist for the benefit of the vulnerable elderly and newborns. She blamed Bollywood for distorting the concept of marriage and insisted that its purpose should be rooted in ‘Dharma’ (duty).
In her final note, Kangana spoke about ancient wisdom and criticised what she saw as the dismantling of social institutions. She stated that there is no joy in relationships, success, wealth, or even marriage itself, as true joy lies in being united with Paramaatma.
She urged people to focus on duty rather than seeking happiness in worldly matters. The actress warned them against endorsing divorces and abandoning traditional family values.

While Kangana’s views found some support, many netizens were quick to call her out. One Reddit user questioned why she does not get married and fulfil her own dharma instead of preaching.
