Rishab Shetty, the actor-director who delivered a blockbuster with Kantara last year, is all set to start shooting for the prequel of the film. Kantara, a sleeper blockbuster, was made on a modest budget of just 16 crore and went on to collect around 450 crore worldwide
Fans of Kantara can now look forward to the prequel of the saga with Kantara 2, which promises to delve deeper into the captivating world established in the first film. With Rishab Shetty’s dedication to bringing this prequel to life, it is expected to garner significant attention from audiences across India.
Now, we have learnt more details about the film’s shoot and expected release. The film, which is yet to be titled, will be produced by Hombale Films, the banner behind the K.G.F franchise and other successful movies.
Kantara 2, A Prequel To Kantara
Rishab Shetty had announced the second part being a prequel at a press conference on Kantara completing 100 days. He had revealed, “What you have seen is actually Part 2, Part 1 will come next year. The idea flashed into my mind while I was shooting for Kantara because the history of Kantara has more depth to it. Currently, we are in the middle of digging into more details. As the research is still underway, it would be very early to reveal details about the film.”
The prequel will explore the backstory of the folklore and the deity, Panjurli Daiva, that was featured in the first part. The film will delve into the origin of the deity and its pact with a troubled king that was intended to protect the villagers and the nature that surrounds them. The film will also reveal how the Kambala sport and the Daiva Kola ritual came into existence.
Earlier this year, Hombale films had shared ‘KANTARA WRITING BEGINS’ creative wishing everybody a happy Ugadi.
Kantara 2: A Bigger And Grander Spectacle
According to sources, the prequel will be bigger in scale and budget than the first part and promises to be a grand spectacle. Rishab Shetty is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the same.
The star cast is also expected to get bigger in the second part of the film. When Rishab Shetty dropped a few hints at a lot of surprises in Kantara 2, he was asked if Rajinikanth will star in Kantara 2. The Kannada star, however, remained mum about the same.

For those unaware, Rajinikanth was mighty impressed with Kantara when it released last year. He had also taken to social media to review the film. In another update, Rishab had also shared how he met Rajinikanth at his Chennai home and discussed Kantara among other topics.
Kantara 2 To Go On Floors In November
The film will be shot extensively in Mangalore and other locations across Karnataka.
Earlier this year, Rishab had gone for a long recce to the coastal and nearby forest regions of Karnataka for two months for an extensive research. Rishab Shetty has also been undergoing extensive physical training for the second part of the film.
“Rishab Shetty and his team have finished the writing and are currently immersed in pre-production. While the first part was shot in Shetty’s hometown in Kandapura, Kantara 2 will prominently be shot in Mangalore. This location encompasses the required elements of jungle, land, and water as dictated by the script. The film has got bigger in budget and cast this time and will be filmed on a larger scale over a four-month schedule,” a source revealed to another publication.
As the project progresses, fans eagerly await the official announcement that will unveil more exciting details about the upcoming movie.
Kantara 2: Official Announcement And Release
Kantara 2 will soon be officially announced with a poster and title. “Aisa nahi karte hum log. Ek official announcement karte hai, proper mahurat rakhe (This is not how we do it. We will make an official announcement and keep a proper mahurat ceremony for that).”he had said in an earlier interview.
The makers intend to finish the shooting by first half of next year and release in late 2024. It will be dubbed in multiple languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and others. The film is one of the most anticipated projects in Indian cinema and fans are eagerly waiting for more updates on it.

Kantara, which released in September 2020, was a period action thriller set in a fictional village of Dakshina Kannada, where a Kambala champion (played by Rishab Shetty) and his father (also played by Rishab Shetty), a Daiva Kola performer, protect their land and people from the forest department’s encroachment. The film was praised for its authentic portrayal of the coastal Karnataka culture, its stunning visuals, and its thrilling action sequences. The film also featured Sapthami Gowda, Kishore, Achyuth Kumar, and Pramod Shetty in pivotal roles.
