Karan Johar, the director of the hit film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, in a recent interview, has revealed that the lead characters of the film were subconsciously inspired by his childhood friend Twinkle Khanna and her husband Akshay Kumar. The film, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, tells the story of a Punjabi businessman and a Bengali journalist who fall in love despite their different backgrounds.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Inspired By Akshay-Twinkle?
In an interview with Mid-Day, Karan said that he was fascinated by the friendship and comfort that Akshay and Twinkle share in their marriage. He said, “Maybe subconsciously (I got inspired). They have a tremendous friendship in their marriage. I’ve had dinners with them, meals with them, hung out with them. And there’s a terrific kind of comfort in their camaraderie. He finds her hilarious, she finds him hilarious, for different reasons. So I felt it wasn’t impossible for people who come from two different demographics of society, two stratas, to actually find love.”
He continued, “It’s like we put ourselves in boxes. Like when we’re finding a relationship, we put ourselves in places where we’re comfortable. But tomorrow, you can fall in love with someone anywhere”
The two actors, Twinkle and Akshay started dating while working together on the sets of Umesh Mehra’s 1999 action film International Khiladi. They got married in 2001, and went on to have a son, Aarav, and a daughter, Nitara.
Long-lasting bond between Karan Johar, Twinkle Khanna, Akshay Kumar
Karan Johar and Twinkle Khanna go way back to their boarding school days, where they were classmates before Karan left the school. Karan wrote the character of Tina (named after Twinkle’s nickname) in his 1998 directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for her, but she rejected the part. The role was eventually essayed by Rani Mukerji.
Karan and Twinkle have remained close friends ever since, and Karan often praises Twinkle for her wit and humour. Akshay Kumar, on the other hand, has worked in several films under Karan’s banner Dharma Productions, such as Brothers, Kesari, Good Newwz, Sooryavanshi and Selfiee. Akshay and Twinkle also appeared together on an episode of Karan’s talk show Koffee with Karan Season 5.
