The Karnataka government has officially set a Rs 200 cap on movie ticket prices across all theatres, including multiplexes. This means no film (regardless of language or format) can be priced above this limit anywhere in the state. The decision aims to make cinema more affordable while preventing excessive ticket prices.
Karnataka CM Announces Ticket Price Limit In His Budget Speech
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced this policy during his recent budget speech, stressing that ticket prices must stay within the new cap. Although a similar rule was introduced earlier, it was not strictly enforced.
Over time, ticket prices in cities like Bengaluru had surged, sometimes reaching Rs 600 on opening weekends. With this regulation, the government hopes to ensure that audiences across Karnataka can enjoy films at a reasonable cost.
However, not everyone is on board with this decision. Film producers and distributors, who often push for higher ticket rates to maximise box office collections, have raised concerns about the impact on revenues. Many believe that premium pricing helps recover production costs, especially for big-budget films.
Govt Also Planning To Introduce State-Run OTT To Promote Kannada Cinemas
In addition to controlling ticket prices, the Karnataka government is working on a major initiative for the film industry. Plans are underway to launch a state-run OTT platform dedicated to promoting Kannada cinema.
This platform aims to give regional films a broader audience and ensure a strong digital presence for Kannada content. It is expected to support local filmmakers by providing them with a space to showcase their work beyond traditional theatres.
The move comes amid ongoing tensions between the government and the Kannada film industry. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently stirred controversy with his remarks about the film industry’s reliance on government approvals.
He stated that the government knows ‘where to tighten the nuts and bolts’ when necessary, suggesting stricter regulations could be imposed. He also criticised the industry for its lack of participation in events like the Bangalore International Film Festival (BIFF) and the 2022 Mekedatu Padayatra, a political movement addressing Karnataka’s water issues.
