Kiran Rao, whose recent directorial venture Laapataa Ladies has been creating a buzz, has shed light on her amicable separation from her former husband Aamir Khan. In a candid interview with Faye D’Souza, Rao revealed that despite their divorce, the process was filled with support and understanding from both their families.
Kiran Rao Says Divorce With Aamir Khan Made Her ‘Happy’
Rao described their divorce as “very happy,” describing the positive outcome of their decision. “I feel relationships need to be redefined from time to time because we change as human beings as we grow,” she explained. “We need different things and this (divorce) is what I felt would make me happy and has made me very happy, honestly.”
Reflecting on her life before marrying Aamir, Rao noted her enjoyment of independence. “Before Aamir, I was single for a very long time. I really enjoyed my independence. I was lonely, but now I have Azad (her son), so I tend not to be lonely,” she said. Rao admitted that loneliness is a common concern for many people going through a divorce but reassured that she has not felt isolated. “I am supported by both families, his family and mine. So, actually, it has been only good stuff. It’s been a very happy divorce,” she added.
Filmmaker Reveals It Was A ‘Challenging’ Decision For Both Her & Aamir
Although the divorce was ultimately positive, Rao acknowledged that making the decision was challenging. “We needed to be secure in the fact that we are not going anywhere, we are there for each other for the long term. It’s just that we don’t have to be married,” she shared. This reflects the couple’s commitment to maintaining their bond despite no longer being married.

Rao also touched on the strength of her relationship with Aamir Khan. She stated that their connection is defined by love, respect, and shared experiences rather than a marriage certificate. “There’s a lot of love, a lot of respect, a lot of shared history, shared laughs, shared ideology,” she explained. “I didn’t want to lose that. When I was secure enough to say, ‘Yeah, we don’t need the paper to say that we are married but we know what we mean to each other,’ that’s when I knew this partnership would stand the test of time despite the divorce.”
How They Met, Married & Parted Ways
Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan first crossed paths on the set of Lagaan. They married on December 28, 2005, and welcomed their son Azad through surrogacy in 2011. The couple announced their separation in 2021. This marked the end of their 15-year marriage but respect and bond continued.
