Directed by Sajid Ali, the film didn’t make much noise at the box office, earning just Rs 2.18 crore during its initial run. It was considered a box office disaster.
However, as the years passed, Laila Majnu found a new life on digital platforms, gradually winning over a niche audience who appreciated its heartfelt narrative.
Fast forward to 2024, and following the success of Rockstar in its re-release, Imtiaz Ali and his team decided to give Laila Majnu another shot on the big screen.
This time, they partnered with national cinema chains for its re-release. The film first made a comeback in a single cinema hall in Kashmir, where it was met with overwhelming enthusiasm from the local audience. Buoyed by this positive response, the makers quickly expanded the film’s re-release to multiplexes across India.
Laila Majnu Set To Achieve A Historic Milestone Upon Its Re-release
Surprisingly, the film, which was initially overlooked, has now found a dedicated audience in theatres. According to tracking reports, Laila Majnu took an opening of Rs 30 lakh on 10 August, followed by a staggering 110% increase, earning Rs 70 lakh on the following Saturday.
This brings the film’s two-day total to Rs 1.00 crore. Pre-sales for Sunday indicate another potential surge in ticket sales, suggesting that the film’s re-release could bring in around Rs 2.00 crore by the end of its opening weekend. This figure is particularly significant, as it surpasses the film’s original three-day earnings of Rs 1.51 crore back in 2018.
Laila Majnu could very well be the first Hindi film in history to outdo its original release during a re-release, though this is a feat that could be confirmed by seasoned cinema historians.
Re-releases were quite popular in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, so this success story may have some precedents. Written by Imtiaz Ali and directed by Sajid Ali, Laila Majnu is now poised to cross its original lifetime earnings of Rs 2.18 crore by Monday, with a decent run expected to continue until the arrival of the Independence Day releases on 15 August.
While the film will face reduced screenings in the coming weeks, its strong initial performance hints at the possibility of another return to cinemas once the buzz around major releases like Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein, and Vedaa subsides. With no major films slated for release in the following month, Laila Majnu might just make its way back to the big screen yet again.
