Maharaj Controversy: THIS One Strong Reason Helped YRF & Netflix To Lift The Stay From Junaid Khan Starrer

Maharaj starring Junaid Khan was certified by CBFC despite exemption for OTT releases. This largely helped Netflix & YRF to lift the stay.

The highly anticipated film Maharaj made its debut on Netflix yesterday, June 21, after the Gujarat High Court lifted the stay imposed earlier. The film garnered attention due to objections raised by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, citing potential religious sentiments.

Originally slated for release on June 14, the film faced a legal hurdle when a stay order was issued on June 13. The subsequent hearings spanned four days, starting from June 18, ultimately leading to the overturning of the stay.

Maharaj Took Certification From CBFC Despite OTT Exemption

During the court proceedings, advocates representing Netflix and Yash Raj Films, the producers of Maharaj, disclosed that the period drama had already received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in May 2023.

This certification played a crucial role in the legal battle, despite the film being a direct-to-digital release, which typically does not mandate CBFC approval.

Reports from Bollywood Hungama reveal more about the CBFC certification process for Maharaj. A source revealed, “Maharaj initially underwent scrutiny by the Examining Committee (EC), but due to its sensitive content, it was subsequently referred to the Revising Committee (RC).

The RC comprehended the filmmakers’ intentions and found the content respectful towards all religions and sects. Consequently, the film was passed with minimal cuts, which the producers willingly accepted. The version now streaming on Netflix incorporates these modifications as advised by the RC.”

The source added, “It is notable that CBFC often demands extensive edits for films dealing with religious or contentious subjects. However, Maharaj received approval, which bolstered the case for its release.”

About Junaid Khan’s Netflix Film

Maharaj, set in 1862, revolves around the historic Maharaj Libel Case between a revered religious figure and Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer, adjudicated in the Supreme Court of Bombay. According to a press statement from the production team, the case remains one of the most significant legal battles in history.

The film marks the debut of Junaid Khan, son of Aamir Khan, alongside acclaimed actors Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey, and Sharvari. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, known for Hichki (2018), Maharaj promises to delve into the intricacies of this landmark legal confrontation.
