Nayanthara has recently been at the centre of controversy after her Instagram post about hibiscus tea sparked a heated debate. The actress initially praised the drink, claiming it could help with a range of health issues from diabetes to acne.
However, her endorsement drew criticism from Cyriac Abby Philips, also known as The Liver Doc, who accused her of spreading misleading information.
Nayanthara’s Controversial Post
In her now-deleted post, The Jawan actress shared glowing remarks about hibiscus tea, attributing its benefits to her health expert, Munmun Ganeriwal. She wrote, “Hibiscus tea is great for the monsoon season as it is rich in vitamins and keeps our immune system in equilibrium. It has antibacterial effects that protect from seasonal infections/illness. P.S. anyone who needs the recipe can check with @munmun.ganeriwal. Stay healthy. Stay happy.”
Hepatologist Slams Her For Spreading Wrong Information
The Liver Doc quickly responded on social media, challenging these claims. He criticised Nayanthara’s post, stating, “If she had stopped at hibiscus tea being kind of tasty, that would have been okay. But no, they have to go ahead and blow their health-illiteracy trumpet and also claim that hibiscus tea is helpful in diabetes, high blood pressure, acne, antibacterial and protects against the flu. Well, none of the above claims have been proven.”
This is cinema actress Nayantara who has more than twice the following of the other actress Samantha miselading her 8.7 million followers on a supplement called hibiscus tea.

Philips further expressed his frustration over the actress’s lack of apology. He said, “Post deleted. But no apology. No accountability. Like a surgical strike on public health. Need laws to curb this kind of behaviour from celebrities and empower registered medical practitioners to provide evidence-based scientific education to improve informed public health choices.”
Update: Even though not an apology, the actress has made an apology-like post asking people not to argue with celebrities like her. pic.twitter.com/x5wewPaxxT

Nayanthara Drops Cryptic Message Post Backlash From Liver Doc
To address the backlash, Nayanthara posted a cryptic message on her Instagram Stories, quoting Mark Twain: “Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” This seems to be her indirect response to the criticism she received.

Before this controversy, something similar happened with Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The actress faced scrutiny for promoting alternative medicine therapies.
