In a recent development, the promotional films of Pathaan featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone have been garnering a lot of attention from fans. The promotional videos, conceptualized by the team of One Hand Clap, showcase the lead actors in hilariously self-aware avatars, baulking at cliched inputs given by the directors.
Aakash Shah and Naveed Manakkodan, the founders of the agency, spoke about the making of these quirky films. One Hand Clap has been the retainer social media marketing agency of Amazon Prime for over four years. The founders shared that the film featuring Khan alongside YouTuber Bhuvan Bam was written beforehand, but the ending was written by SRK on the set itself.
Speaking about the brief given by the OTT platform, the founders said, “Pathaan on Prime” was the brief. Because while it is coming on prime it is still running in theatre so Pathan on Prime had to be attributed well. The founders brainstormed with the Amazon team and came up with the idea of an artist getting pestered because of bad ideas.
The challenging part for Amazon and the agency was to attribute the film more to Prime. They added, “Bhuvan is the internet’s rockstar, SRK and him coming together created a moment.”
Deepika Padukone’s promo was made in a similar vein with influencer Danish Sait. The founders explained that since Bam and SRK had worked together previously and so had Padukone and Sait, they decided to go with the pairing.
The founders shared that the only challenge they faced while making the film was the time crunch. In one day, they had many things to do apart from making these films. They shot the films in an hour for SRK and 45 minutes with Deepika Padukone.
Pathaan revived people’s love for Bollywood movies and gave SRK a major comeback. The film is a great case study for many film marketers to work on a smart strategy, slowly seeding hints in the minds of the audience thereby creating buzz. The team of One Hand Clap has definitely struck gold with these quirky and self-aware promos that are loved by fans.
