Prabhas‘ action-packed thriller Salaar hit Japanese theatres on July 5, marking a significant international release nearly seven months after its initial premiere.
In its debut weekend, the film grossed an impressive JPY 18.22 million (USD 113K) across nearly 200 screens, securing the third-highest opening for an Indian film in recent times in the Japanese market.
Salaar Becomes 3rd Highest Opener Indian Film In Japan
Since its release, Salaar has continued to perform steadily, adding nearly JPY 5 million on Monday and Tuesday, bringing its total earnings to JPY 23 million (USD 142K) within the first few days. Analysts predict that the film’s first-week earnings could reach approximately JPY 28 million, although it falls short of the staggering JPY 75 million debuts of RRR and the JPY 50 million of Saaho.
The top opening weekends for Indian films in Japan currently stand as follows:
| Rank | Title | Year | Gross (JPY million) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | RRR | 2023 | 44.35 |
| 2 | Saaho | 2020 | 23.00 |
| 3 | Salaar | 2024 | 18.22 |
| 4 | Pathaan | 2023 | 14.69 |
| 5 | Dangal | 2018 | 12.40 |
Commenting on the unique dynamics of the Japanese market, where films can enjoy prolonged runs and unpredictable trends, industry experts recalled the phenomenal success stories of Baahubali 2 and RRR. Despite initial social scores comparable to Saaho, which had decent longevity in Japan, observers are keen to monitor Salaar’s performance over the coming weeks.
The influx of Indian cinema into Japan in recent years has shown promising results, gradually establishing a foothold for Bollywood and regional films alike. As more Indian films find audiences in Japan, the market could potentially grow into a significant territory for Indian cinema, contributing to its global appeal and box office success abroad.
