Radhika Apte is trying something new in her career. After impressing audiences with roles in Padman, Andhadhun, and Monica O My Darling, she is now turning director. She has confirmed her directorial debut with Kotya, a Hindi-Marathi action-fantasy film. The film is being produced by Vikramaditya Motwane.
Kotya was first introduced as part of the Cinev-CHD Market lineup at the Cinevesture International Film Festival (CIFF). The festival highlights 22 films from both new and known filmmakers. Radhika has now confirmed that she will be directing the film.
Radhika Apte Confirms Directing Vikramaditya Motwane’s Kotya
In an interview, she said, “I am working on two-three projects and I am hoping that something materialises in the next two years. There’s a film I am doing with Vikramaditya Motwane. He’s producing it. I have not written it but I’ll be directing it.”
The story of Kotya follows a young sugarcane cutter who is forced into a medical procedure. She ends up gaining superpowers and uses them to save her family from heavy debt. The plot focuses on power, struggle, and survival. This could be a strong directorial debut for Radhika.
She also revealed that she has two more films lined up. One of them is a script she has written herself and plans to direct. Radhika, who recently came back to Mumbai after her maternity break, is now back at work.
Speaking about her move into direction, Radhika said the industry needs to take more risks. She shared that filmmaking feels “very restricting” right now and hopes to see bolder stories being told.
Vikramaditya Motwane, who is known for Udaan, Lootera, and Jubilee, is producing Kotya. His collaboration with Radhika is already generating buzz, especially since the film explores a unique concept with regional roots.
Radhika’s Work Front
On the work front, Radhika was last seen in Last Days, an American biopic directed by Justin Lin. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
She also appeared in Sister Midnight, which had its world premiere at Cannes. The film earned a BAFTA nomination, and Radhika received a BIFA nomination for playing a woman stuck in a difficult marriage.
