What Made Radhika Apte’s BAFTA-Nominated Sister Midnight One Of The Year’s Most Talked-About Films? Find Out Before Its May 23 Release!

Radhika Apte’s Sister Midnight is unlike anything you’ve seen — mosquitoes, blood, marriage & BAFTA buzz collide in this Cannes favourite.

Radhika Apte’s new film Sister Midnight is unlike any Bollywood film you have probably seen — there are mosquitoes, bloodlust and BAFTA buzz! Due to be released in Indian cinemas on 23 May 2025, Sister Midnight is a dark comedy horror, which has already made a splash at a host of international film festivals and is now finding its way home.

But what is this film about, and why is it so interesting?

From Cannes To Your Local Cinema: Sister Midnight’s Unbelievable Journey

Sister Midnight is distributed by PVR INOX Pictures and PictureWorks India and was written and directed by Karan Kandhari, who is making his debut with this feature film.

  • The film received a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding British Debut
  • Nominated at Cannes (Director’s Fortnight + Golden Camera)
  • Nominated at BIFA Awards
  • Won Best Picture at Austin’s Fantastic Fest

And now it has an Indian release — a theatrical date with destiny on May 23, 2025.

But What Makes This Film So Genre-Defying?

The synopsis is wild!
A newly married woman named Uma, who is coming to terms with her husband Gopal and life in a cramped Mumbai room, is bitten by a mosquito while at a wedding. Afterwards, she encounters an insatiable bloodlust, quickly growing pale and sick and very quickly becoming very different.

Uma, the lead character, played with gritty realism and dark humour by Radhika Apte, chronicles her transformation into a metaphor for feminine rage, alienation, and survival — told through the lens of body horror meets deadpan comedy.

“There isn’t a handbook for existence,” states Kandhari.
“If it’s not funny, I’m not writing it.”

The film also features Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, Smita Tambe, and Navya Sawant with cinematography by Sverre Sørdal and editing by Napoleon Stratogiannakis.

Why Everyone Is Calling It “India’s Most Unusual Film of 2025”

With international acclaim and a concept that is a mashup between Lady Bird and Let The Right One In, Sister Midnight has garnered accolades as a new expression of Indian womanhood and urban alienation.

Critics have categorised it as:

  • “A Buster Keaton-esque fall into madness”
  • “A horror film with heart — and humor”
  • “The most unpredictable movie of the year”

The BoxOfficeWorldwide Verdict

Radhika Apte’s Sister Midnight may just be the most unusual and audacious theatrical release of 2025. With a BAFTA, a brilliantly bizarre plot, and an unapologetically weird character, you will not forget this film easily, if at all.

You do not want to miss it in theatres!
