Rajkummar Rao’s turn as Ujjwal Nikam in Prahaar is drawing attention not just for the transformation, but for the trust that shaped it behind the scenes. Director Avinash Arun has now spoken about why Rao was never one option among many for the film, but the actor he wanted from the very beginning. In a story rooted in courtroom grit and lived memory, Arun’s remarks make it clear that familiarity, instinct and conviction were central to that choice.
Why Rajkummar Rao Was The First Choice
Arun’s reasoning was deeply personal as much as professional. Speaking about casting Rao as Ujjwal Nikam, the director said, “Raj was always my first choice for Ujjwal Nikam because of his conviction as an actor and his dedication to complex characters.” For a film anchored by one of the most recognisable prosecutors in modern Indian legal history, that confidence in the lead actor became the emotional starting point of the project.
The choice also carries added weight because Rao’s reputation for immersion is already well established. Arun’s comment places the emphasis not on external resemblance alone, but on the actor’s ability to enter demanding material with clarity and discipline. That is especially crucial in Prahaar, which is built around legal process, moral pressure and the intensity of courtroom confrontation.
A Collaboration Rooted In College Days
The bond between the actor and filmmaker goes back much further than this film. Arun has said their association stretches back to their college days, giving Prahaar an intimacy that is rare in large scale biographical dramas. That shared history appears to have created an ease on set, one that helped the film’s most difficult scenes land with unusual immediacy.
Arun also singled out Rao’s instinctive performance style in exact terms. Recalling the way several moments fell into place during filming, he said, “Rajkummar is such an instinctive actor that many of our scenes came together in the very first take.” That observation says plenty about the rhythm of their collaboration. In a film that depends on stillness, precision and persuasive argument, a first take carrying the intended emotional force is no small achievement.
Prahaar And What Comes Next
Directed by Avinash Arun, Prahaar stars Rajkummar Rao in the lead and is backed by Maddock Films. The courtroom drama is set for a theatrical release on October 16, 2026, and centres on Ujjwal Nikam’s role in the Ajmal Kasab trial after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The cast also includes Wamiqa Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sikandar Kher, Ashish Vidyarthi, Lalit Prabhakar and Ritvik Sahore.
As for Rao, Prahaar stands as one of his key confirmed releases ahead, and Arun’s comments have only sharpened interest in how that long friendship has translated onscreen.
