Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are undoubtedly two of Bollywood’s biggest superstars, and their on-screen chemistry in the 1995 hit Karan Arjun remains iconic even after nearly three decades.
As the film gears up for a special re-release on November 22, 2024, director Rakesh Roshan recently opened up about working with these two superstars and shared his admiration for their enduring dedication to the industry.
During his recent conversation with Pinkvilla, Rakesh Roshan reflected on the making of Karan Arjun and took a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Rakesh Roshan Showers Praise On Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan
He applauded not just Salman and Shah Rukh but also Kajol for their dedication. The veteran director appreciated how these stars are still active and thriving in the industry, even 30 years after Karan Arjun.
He shared, “I think they are terrific, both of them. Hats off to them, and to Kajol as well. They’re still working in films today, even after 30 years. It’s truly tremendous. It shows their willpower and how they’ve taken care of themselves, physically and mentally. They’re always on top of their game.”
Roshan added that despite achieving superstar status, both Shah Rukh and Salman have stayed grounded. They haven’t let stardom get to their heads. If you meet them today, they’re still the same, hardworking boys. They are always looking for new experiences, pushing themselves to explore something different.
“They’ve not given up ke hum bade star ban gaye hain superstar ban gaye hain (We’ve become big stars or superstars). They are still the same if you meet them. They’re still the same, hardworking boys as they want to do something new, as they want to experience something new,” he added.
On How It Was Challenging To Cast Two Biggest Stars Of Bollywood In Karan Arjun
The director also spoke to ETimes about the challenges of casting two of Bollywood’s biggest stars in one film. There were natural concerns about potential competition or rivalry between the two leading men. However, Roshan ensured that Shah Rukh and Salman were on the same page before the cameras started rolling.
Roshan recalled, “I remember sitting down with both of them before we began shooting. I narrated the entire story, along with their characters and dialogues, to make sure they understood the emotional depth of their roles. I asked them if they had any concerns, they should share them right there, not on set. I made it clear that both characters were equally important, so there was no room for insecurity or one-upmanship.”
Released in 1995, Karan Arjun was a blockbuster that captivated audiences with its gripping story of two brothers who reincarnate to avenge their father’s death. The film also featured a stellar cast including Kajol, Mamta Kulkarni, Rakhee Gulzar, and Amrish Puri, making it one of Bollywood’s timeless classics.
