Ram Gopal Varma is going bigger than expected with Police Company. The filmmaker’s new underworld drama, inspired by Mumbai’s feared encounter squad and fronted by Harshvardhan Rane as Daya Nayak, is now being mounted as a two-part theatrical saga, with both films set to be shot back-to-back as production begins on August 17, 2026.
The development sharply scales up a project that already carried curiosity because it takes Varma back to the crime terrain most closely tied to his most enduring screen legacy. Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that the makers are planning a staggered release pattern in 2027, with the second chapter expected to follow the first within a few months.
From Web Series Plan To Back-To-Back Big Screen Event
Police Company was initially conceived as a web series because of the breadth of its story, but Varma pushed for a theatrical adaptation in two parts. The move is rooted in the film’s expansive narrative, its ensemble of police and underworld characters, and its period setting, all of which are now being shaped as a back-to-back big-screen franchise rather than a streaming title.
A source close to the development said, “RGV has written it in such a way that it’s going to blow everyone’s minds. Both parts are going to be a crazy, action-packed, thrilling experience for theatrical audiences. He’s literally back to his original form and is giving it his 100% to make it his much-awaited comeback project.”
That scale also feeds directly into the world of Police Company, which is set in the late 1990s and early 2000s and follows the Mumbai Police Detection Unit, widely associated with the city’s infamous encounter squad. The story is built around officers who took on heavily armed organised crime syndicates at a time when the underworld had tightened its grip on Mumbai. Harshvardhan Rane leads the cast as Daya Nayak, while Fardeen Khan, Saurabh Shukla, Paresh Rawal and Makarand Deshpande feature in pivotal roles.
T-Series Bets Big On A Two-Chapter 2027 Rollout
Backed by T-Series, the film is expected to wrap by the end of 2026, which gives the makers enough runway to prepare the first installment for a mid-2027 release and position the second chapter soon after. Shooting both parts together also signals a clear attempt to preserve continuity in tone, performances and world-building, especially for a story that moves between the police force and the underworld across one of Mumbai’s most volatile eras.
That ambition also gives Harshvardhan Rane one of the most high-profile roles in the project, placing him at the center of a film designed on a broader canvas than his recent titles.
Harshvardhan Rane Steps Into A Key Role In Varma’S Crime Return
For Harshvardhan Rane, Police Company arrives at an interesting point in his career. After releases such as Savi and The Miranda Brothers in 2024, followed by Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat in 2025, this film places him in the middle of an ambitious studio-backed crime saga and hands him the responsibility of playing one of the project’s most recognizable real-life figures. In that sense, his casting is central to the film’s ambition, and to the charge surrounding Varma’s return to a genre that has long defined his strongest work.
