Ranbir Kapoor stuns as Lord Rama in Ramayana look amid update on Animal and Brahmastra sequels

Ranbir Kapoor has put a clear timeline on a dream he has spoken about for years: direction. Even as Ramayana: Part 1 opened in cinemas on November 5, the actor said he wants to wrap the big franchise commitments already on his plate before stepping behind the camera for his first film.

Ranbir Kapoor Maps Out His Directorial Plan

In a recent interview, Ranbir opened up about writing a script and the creative pull of direction. He said, “I just started writing a script a couple of months back, and it’s so hard to create. I have so much respect for writers and creators. ‘How do you create?’ It’s exciting because I truly believe that after a musician, if there’s somebody who feels a creative high, it’s the director. An actor’s high is very superficial but the director, when he directs a movie, however good or bad, the opportunity to tell a story and get all these people together to tell your story, it’s just a beautiful experience and I hope I can do it.”

He also gave a sense of the kind of story he wants to tell. “I can’t define the genre but I’ll tell you all my favourite films… and I hope it comes in that bracket like Life is Beautiful, It’s a Wonderful Life, Rajkumar Hirani movies. I would say like a feel-good family drama.”

Why He Wants To Move Within 2 To 3 Years

What makes this update especially striking is Ranbir’s sense of urgency. Speaking about balancing acting and writing, he said, “I work only 100-125 days a year; I have a lot of time to write stories. I’ve never ever been so busy, never ever been so committed. I’ve always had one film out, and then I would start working on the other film. But, I guess, it’s my last decade as an actor; will I get to play these parts? I do want to kind of pivot towards direction. I don’t want to direct myself for sure. I really want to get these films done (Brahmastra 2, Animal 2 and Ramayana Part 2), and really get on floors with my directorial debut within 2 or 3 years, I hope.”

That statement sharpens the next phase of his career. Rather than treating direction as a distant ambition, Ranbir is now placing it right after the sequels that are expected to define his immediate slate.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Ranbir was last seen in Animal in 2023, the Sandeep Reddy Vanga-directed action drama co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol, which emerged as the biggest commercial success of his career. He has now returned to the big screen with Ramayana: Part 1, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and co-starring Sai Pallavi, Yash and Ravie Dubey.

His next confirmed theatrical release is Love & War, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama starring Ranbir alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. The film is scheduled to release on January 21, 2027. With Ramayana: Part 2, Animal 2 and Brahmastra 2 also forming part of the conversation around his future lineup, Ranbir appears to be entering a packed stretch as an actor before he attempts the shift he seems most excited about.
