REPORT: Nana Patekar & Mehul Kumar Team Up Again For Tirangaa, Official Annoucement Coming Soon

Nana Patekar is set to return to the screen with Mehul Kumar’s new film Tirangaa, marking their fourth collaboration.

The 1993 Bollywood classic Tirangaa is making headlines again. Reports surfaced recently suggesting that Akshay Kumar might star in a remake of the iconic film.

The buzz around the remake was fuelled by news that Narendra Hirawat of NH Studioz, who holds the rights to Tirangaa, had signed Kumar for the project. However, Hirawat revealed that the film won’t retain the original title as it is owned by the film’s producer-director, Mehul Kumar.

Nana Patekar & Mehul Kumar’s Another Film Titled Tirangaa

A Bollywood Hungama report reveals that Mehul Kumar is also preparing a new film titled Tirangaa. Not only will Kumar return to directing, but he will also reunite with the original film’s star, Nana Patekar. The official announcement is expected on August 15, aligning with India’s 77th Independence Day—a fitting occasion for a patriotic film like Tirangaa.

This upcoming project marks the fourth collaboration between Mehul Kumar and Nana Patekar. The duo previously worked together on hits such as Tirangaa (1993), Krantiveer (1994), and Kohram (1999). The original Tirangaa, released on January 29, 1993, also featured Raaj Kumar and has become a staple on television, particularly during Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.

Cast Details Kept Under Wraps

Details about the new Tirangaa‘s cast and crew are yet to be revealed. Meanwhile, Narendra Hirawat addressed the confusion over the film’s title in an interview with Times Now. Hirawat asserted that he holds the rights to the title Tirangaa and mentioned that it was Akshay Kumar’s wish to keep the title for his remake.

Contrary to Hirawat’s claims, Mehul Kumar insists that he retains the rights to the title. He expressed his reservations about remaking a classic like Tirangaa, highlighting concerns about inevitable comparisons to the original performances by Patekar and Raaj Kumar. Kumar told Bollywood Hungama, “Mr Narendra Hirawat did approach me for the title. I told him that certain landmark films are best not remade. Today, if you remake Tirangaa, people are immediately going to draw comparisons with Nana Patekar and Raaj Kumar. And if the performances are not up to the mark, then people won’t be impressed.”

Kumar further elaborated in an interview with Times Now, “Hirawat does not have the title Tirangaa as he says. The title is with me and I have registered three titles having the word TirangaaTirangaa, Tirangaa 2, and Mission Tirangaa. I am already in talks with Nana for Mission Tirangaa. So, Hirawat will need a NOC from me if, at all, he goes with that title.”
