Mumbai Police have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, a Bangladeshi migrant, in connection with the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan. The 30-year-old suspect was captured early this morning near the Hiranandani Estate in Thane, about 35 kilometres from Khan’s home.
Accused Went To Saif Ali Khan’s House For Theft
Shahzad had been living in Mumbai for four months under the name Bijoy Das. Police revealed he entered India illegally. Senior police official Dixit Gedam confirmed the arrest, saying, “Investigation has revealed that he went to Saif’s house with the intention of theft. It seems the accused is a Bangladeshi.”
The suspect reportedly entered Khan’s house through a backfire exit. The actor’s maid, Junu, saw him and screamed for help. When Khan confronted Shahzad, the attacker stabbed him six times before escaping.
Both Khan and the maid were injured. Khan was taken to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors confirmed he is recovering well.
Items found during the arrest pointed to Shahzad’s Bangladeshi background. A police statement said, “The robber asked for money and when he was opposed, he attacked the maid and Saif Ali Khan. The accused is now in custody.”
Another Suspect Was Also Arrested Recently
The arrest followed the detention of another suspect, 31-year-old Aakash Kailash Kannojia, at Durg railway station in Chhattisgarh. Kannojia was caught on Saturday after being identified on the Mumbai-Howrah Jnaneswari Express.
Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials said, “The Mumbai Police had sent the suspect’s photo, train number, and location to the RPF, after which he was caught. He was travelling without a ticket.”
Sources say Kannojia looked like the first suspect and is currently being questioned.
The attack on Saif Ali Khan has shocked his fans and the public, raising concerns about the safety of celebrities in Mumbai. Police continue to investigate how the suspect entered India and the details of the attack.
