The re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam has created a buzz at the box office. The 2016 romantic drama starring Harshvardhan Rane returned to cinemas on February 7, 2025, nine years after its original release.
As the film enjoys renewed success, talks about a sequel have surfaced. However, producer Deepak Mukut has stepped in to clarify the situation.
Who Owns the Rights Of Sanam Teri Kasam 2?
Directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru recently claimed they are working on a sequel. But Mukut (the original film’s producer) has made it clear that he holds intellectual property (IP) rights.
He told Bollywood Hungama, “The IP of Sanam Teri Kasam belongs to me since I am its producer. So, the rights to make a sequel or even a prequel or a remake rests with me.”
Mukut also mentioned that he had already announced Sanam Teri Kasam 2 in September 2024. However, he has not discussed the project with Rao and Sapru.
“They haven’t met and spoken to me about it. I have not finalised any director. It is their duty to reach out to me rather than the other way round, especially since they are giving interviews about making the sequel,” he added.
Harshvardhan Rane Confirmed To Return In Sequel
The sequel is in the works but will only begin filming once the script is complete. Mukut confirmed that Harshvardhan Rane will return, but Mawra Hocane will not be a part of the film.
Speaking about the casting, he said, “We are looking for an ideal girl for the part. She should be a nice performer just like Mawra Hocane in the first part.” This means a new leading lady will take centre stage.
Directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, Sanam Teri Kasam was Harshvardhan Rane’s Bollywood debut. While it struggled at the box office in 2016, the film later gained popularity through streaming platforms. The unexpected success of its re-release has now reignited interest in a sequel.
