Swades Director On Moving From Direction To Production

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Ashutosh spoke about starting AGPPL and moving from directing to producing. He shared that after the success of Lagaan (2001), he felt confident enough to start producing his own films.

He shared, “I realised that if I was making another film, I wanted to stand on my own feet and produce it myself. With Lagaan, Aamir Khan gave me the freedom to make the film the best way possible, and I wanted to replicate that experience. That’s when I decided to start AGPPL.”

He also thanked his wife, Sunita, for her support in starting the company. “I asked her if she would be willing to take on the role of producer, which was new to her, too. Thankfully, she immediately agreed, and that’s how the company came to be.”

Ashutosh also revealed that he is working on a film about Lijjat Papad after a five-year break from directing. Due to the pandemic, production was delayed, but he mentioned that the script is now ready.

When asked about making more period films, Ashutosh, known for his work on Lagaan, teased a new project without revealing details.

He also addressed the idea of acting & said, “If I get a good offer and a good role, only then would I consider acting. Otherwise, I prefer focusing on direction.”
